Frequently Asked Questions
Students may enroll at any time, space permitting. Arriving students are given assessment tests and interviews, from which an individualized program is designed. Students move through these programs as rapidly as they are learning and demonstrating competence.
We do not have a program that isolates gifted students from others. However the Laurel Academy program is particularly well-suited to the brighter child because it allows students to advance as rapidly as they are learning and demonstrating competence.
Students may enter our Kindergarten Prep as early as four years old, as long as they will turn five by April 1st of that school year.
We do not have a program to handle children with serious problems but have found that students are often mislabeled as “behavior problems” or “disabled.” For some of these children, our basic teaching method and study techniques are all that are required to get the student back on track.
We evaluate each student on an individual basis after we have given him or her a battery of standardized tests, reviewed previous school records and conducted at least one interview. Based on the results of those activities he or she would be considered for enrollment.
We see parent involvement as critical. In our close-knit, family oriented community, we end up developing strong bonds with our students and this relationship extends to the whole family. In a sense, you have invited the school into your family, and we are aware of the trust and partnership that implies. Your active participation with the school in your child’s education is more than important. We view it as essential.
Laurel Academy does not practice religious instruction. We do however have families from all different religions of the world and we respect the religious beliefs of our students and families.
